Join NEAMGLL

Joining NEAMGLL is a simple process. Interested parties should contact the President of NEAMGLL (secretariat@naml.org).

NEAMGLL has two classes of members, regular members and associate members.

Regular membership. Regular memberships are available to marine laboratories operated by state, university, and other non-profit organizations in the United States, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Panama. Marine laboratories are defined as those shore-based laboratory facilities directly accessing the marine environment or other facilities or academic entities that are partially or primarily focused on marine research, education or outreach. Regular members of NEAMGLL are also members of NAML, the National Association of Marine Laboratories.

Application process for Regular membership:

  1. Application Letter. Applications for regular membership are in the form of a letter or an email from a responsible officer of the candidate member organization, addressed to the President of NEAMGLL. The letter must indicate the intent of the organization to become a regular member of the regional organization and the National Association of Marine Laboratories. (NAML Bylaws, Article I, Section 1: Applications.)

  2. Approval. NEAMGLL and NAML must approve the request for membership. This is done by a majority vote of the NEAMGLL Executive Committee and a majority vote of the NAML Board of Directors. The NEAMGLL and NAML votes are subject to ratification by a vote of the membership of NEAMGLL and NAML at the next regular meeting of each. Approved candidate organizations must pay annual capital contributions to become members. (NAML Bylaws, Article I, Section 1: Applications.)

  3. Delegate. The responsible officer of each member represents the organization as a delegate or appoints an individual employed by the organization as a delegate. (NAML Bylaws, Article I, Section 3: Representation.) Regular delegates may appoint an alternate delegate with voting rights. (See NAML Bylaws, Article I, Section 5: Alternate Delegate.)

Associate membership. Associate members are members only of a regional association. Associate members are those laboratories and non-profit organizations that either do not wish to participate in the national organization or cannot be voting members of the national association because they are Federal laboratories. Associate members are not eligible for membership in NAML. (Defined in NAML Articles of Organization, Section IV.) Associate members are permitted certain rights within the regional organizations as described in the Articles of Organization and Bylaws of each regional organization. (Bylaws, Article I, Section 4B: Voting.)

Application process for Associate membership in a regional organization:

  1. Application Letter. Applications for associate membership are in the form of a letter or an email from a responsible officer of the candidate member organization, addressed to the President of NEAMGLL. The letter must indicate the intent of the organization to become an associate member of the regional organization.

  2. Approval. The NEAMGLL Executive Committee must approve the request by a majority vote. The approval is subject to ratification by a vote of the membership at the next regular meeting of NEAMGLL. Approved candidate organizations must pay annual capital contributions to become members.

  3. Representation. Associate members may participate in the activities of the regional organization. They may serve on committees or other supporting bodies of the regional organization, other than its Executive Committee.
