NEAMGLL Student Awards

Northeastern Association of Marine and Great Lakes Laboratories

Student Support Program 2024

The competition for 2024 is now closed.

The mission of the National Association of Marine Laboratories (NAML) and its three regional organizations is to promote excellence in research, education, and public outreach in the marine sciences. NAML also seeks to provide a forum for the resolution of challenges common to non-profit marine laboratories in the United States and to inform the wise use and conservation of marine and coastal resources. The Association is committed to establishing an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of NAML’s research, education, and outreach.

As part of this mission, the Northeastern Association of Marine and Great Lakes Laboratories (NEAMGLL) is offering two categories of support to undergraduate and graduate students who are attending or visiting NEAMGLL member institutions.

  1. Purpose of Award. Awards are for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in or visiting a NEAMGLL Institution. A full listing of NEAMGLL member institutions can be found on the NEAMGLL website.

    1. Research Support. Up to $1,000 per student is available to support student researchers from a NEAMGLL institution. Priority is given to students who will be performing research at another NEAMGLL member institution, will be performing marine-freshwater comparisons, and/or who can demonstrate available matching funds. Funds can be used for travel, lodging, subsistence and other related expenses (not including equipment or supplies).

    2. Conference Attendance. Up to $500 per student is available to help students attend a relevant conference to present on research conducted primarily at a marine lab or field station of a NEAMGLL member institution or as an opportunity for professional development (not presenting). Priority is given to students who will present their research (oral or poster), who have attended or presented at few or no professional conferences before, and who can demonstrate available matching funds when needed. Funds can be used for registration, travel, lodging, subsistence and other related conference expenses.

  2. Eligibility. Applicants must be enrolled in or visiting a NEAMGLL Institution. A full listing of NEAMGLL member institutions can be found on the NEAMGLL website. The NEAMGLL institutional Delegate will be notified of the student's application and will need to verify the standing of the student at that institution.

  3. Application. The student must apply by completing and submitting the online application form (click here) by March 1, 2024. In addition, the following documents must be submitted as a single PDF file to https://www.dropbox.com/request/7JroVODebZor6dvPDWSZ.

    1. Application summary; Include a project title and up to 300 word narrative describing the purpose of the award. In addition to the 300 word narrative, include conference details and/or research project dates and location. Include a bulleted budget summary. If the full budget of the proposal requires funding greater than that requested of NEAMGLL, indicate the source of the supplemental funds.

    2. Letter of Reference; one short (< 300 words) letter of reference from a faculty advisor.

    3. CV; brief academic Curriculum Vitae.

  4. Timeline and awarding. The application deadline is March 1, 2024 for expenditures to be made during the calendar year 2024. Full and/or partial awards may be made by NEAMGLL and will be announced by April 1, 2024.

  5. Award disbursement and tax information. The award will be issued directly to awardee in the form of a check. This award is considered taxable income and requires the awardee to complete the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's form W-9: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf. Awards greater than $599 will require that NAML accounting submit a 1099 tax form to the IRS.

  6. Post-award requirements.Students receiving funding will be required to acknowledge NEAMGLL where appropriate in their presentations, publications and other products. Award recipients are required to follow up with NEAMGLL in one of several ways, in order of preference;

    1. Present a 5-minute lightning talk about your research or conference experience at a NEAMGLL meeting (in-person or virtually). NEAMGLL meets at least one time per year and this presentation will provide the recipient an opportunity to network with over 30 member Institutions.

    2. Provide NEAMGLL with a copy of your research poster or short slide show and permission for it to be displayed on the NEAMGLL website.

    3. Send an email summary of your use of the funds by December 31, 2024 to NEAMGLL.President.Elect@naml.org.

  1. Questions. Address questions to the NEAMGLL President-Elect (NEAMGLL.President.Elect@naml.org).
